Atilia : The New Jazz Lady from Malaysia

Meet Atilia, a rising star from Malaysia, that stunned many people at Java Jazz 2008 with her great performance. Atilia is set to be the next crooners in Malaysia. She has crisp husky voice that sounds very beautiful. Her mom, Salamiah Hassan is not a stranger for Malaysians, one of the most renowned jazz and evergreen singers in the country.
Does the fact give her some advantages or setbacks? “No one wants to be the shadows of another.But with my mum, I take it as a blessing and priviledge. After all, without her, where would I be now?” she said. “She was my drive, my catalyst, my support and the shoulder that I cry on when I need to bawl out. In all, no one can have a better best friend than what I have with my mum.”
Born in the southern state of Johor, and grew up in Kuala Lumpur, Atilia feels complete support from her family. That boost up her confidence in creating some of the finest melodies in Malaysia. The evident is revealed in her debut album, “Sangkar” that has launched in March 2007 and marketed domestically in June 2007 in Malaysia.

She’s not a stranger to music industry at all. She began to sing at the early age of eight. She sang jingle for Kentucky Fried Chicken when she was 9 years old, and that started her career in music. When she was 12 years old, she represented Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore for Regional Coca Cola Commercial that was held in England.
In 1996, Roslan Aziz, the Sultan of Soul in Malaysia, and the man behind some great names like Sheila Madjid and Zainal Abidin, and the head of Roslan Aziz Production (RAP) spotted her, then produced her first single “Pelangi Mimpi” (The Rainbow of Dream). Between 1996 to 2000, while waiting for her musical talent to brew even better, Atilia worked with Amir Yusoff’s Aquarius album, with Sasi the Don’s The Tide is High, with Poetic Ammo on Pass the Honey, and of course with the mum, Salamiah Hassan.
Her inspiration came from Sade, Earth Wind and Fire, Incognito, Brand New Heavies, Malaysian artists Sheila Madjid, Azlina Aziz, Khatijah Ibrahim, Fairuz Hussein, or Indonesian artists Adien, Maliq n d’Essentials, Tompi and the Bali Lounge album.
The album “Sangkar” (Cage), is a long awaited album. It’s been in the making for 10 years, and now it’s ready. She’s ready to shine in the music scene. Atilia sings with the most simplistic manner, without vocal acrobatics to impress her capabilities of reaching several octaves. All she desire is to project and tell stories in a musical and soothing manner that will have you glued to your speakers and hear the crispness and clarity of her voice. I Wayan Balawan is a jazz guitarist from Ubud, Gianyar, Bali. He was born on September 1973, and grew up around the Balinese gamelan music environment. He started playing guitar when he was still 8 years old, and made his first band when he was 14 years old. When he reached 20 years old, he went to Sydney to study at the Australian Institute of Music under a scolarship, then he came back to Bali and formed Batuan Ethnic Fusion, where he brilliantly combining Balinese gamelan music and jazz. Until now, he’s considered as one of the most famous and favorite Indonesian jazz guitarist.
Balawan has a really special style. His “Touch Tapping Style” (almost like Stanley Jordan style), a style with eight finger plays to tap the fretboard, covering all the bass, chord and melody all alone. His left hand handles chord and bass, while the right hand tapped the melody, which resembles piano playing. His albums are all great, combining Balinese instruments with jazz fusion. I like this guitar. I love the price. I like the sound. I like the feel. I would buy another on if it were lost or..., When you compare 175 prices you can't justify passing this guitar up. Try it!!!

BIOLA TERMAHAL DIDUNIA

Sebuah biola Stradivarius memecahkan rekor lelang termahal di balai lelang Christie.
Biola ini dikenal dengan julukan "The Hammer" alias "si Palu". Dinamakan demikian karena pernah dimiliki oleh Christian Hammer, seorang kolektor Swedia pada abad ke 19.
Biola Stradivarius ini telah berumur hampir 300 tahun, telah memecahkan rekor harga termahal yang pernah dibayarkan untuk sebuah alat musik. Terjual pada hari Rabu 17 Mei 2006 di balai lelang Christie New York, dengan harga fantastis US$ 3.5 Juta setara dengan 280 Milyar Rupiah.
Instrumen musik ini dibuat pada tahun 1707, yang telah mengalahkan harga penjualan sebuah biola Stradivarius yang lain pada tahun 2003, seharga US$ 2.03 Juta.
Pembelinya tidak disebutkan namanya, tetapi sumber dari balai lelang Christie New York menyebutkan dia adalah seorang pencinta dan pelindung seni musik klasik. Selama ini biola tersebut dimiliki oleh seseorang, yang sering meminjamkannya kepada orkestra ternama didunia.
Lelangnya sendiri berlangsung amat menegangkan, dengan reaksi-reaksi tercengang diperlihatkan oleh para penonton yang menyaksikan lelang tersebut. Tepukan yang amat meriah terdengar pada waktu tawaran mencapai US$ 3 Juta.
"Saya harus mengakui bahwa saya hampir tidak dapat bernapas pada waktu menyaksikan lelang tersebut," kata Kerry Keane, kepala dari departemen instrumen musik balai lelang Christie. Dia mengatakan bahwa biola ini akan terus dimainkan pada konser-konser musik klasik mendatang diseluruh dunia.

Antonio Stradivari adalah seorang pembuat biola paling ternama dalam sejarah.
Dia telah membuat lebih dari 1000 biola, viola, cello dan violoncellos. Seydel Saxony

Hot item yang baru saja direlease ini banyak mendapat baik pujian maupun kritikan, karena memang sedang sangat diperhatikan di pertengahan tahun 2009 ini di kalangan pencinta harmonika kromatik. Pabrik harmonika yang mengaku tertua di dunia, satu-satunya yang masih “asli” Jerman dan dibuat dengan tangan ini menerobos dengan rancangan reed baja tahan karat yang rapat dengan slot-nya, comb alumunium dan reedplate perak Jerman. Hasilnya adalah sebuah harmonika yang sangat responsif, dengan kerapatan nada dan gerakan slide yang sangat ringan dan lincah. Seydel sudah dikenal dengan responsifitas nada rendah yang sangat ringan bahkan untuk nada draw-nya, seperti penulis rasakan di model Chromatic Deluxe.

Hasil pengamatan penulis menambahkan bahwa masih ada beberapa kekurangan yang cukup bisa ditoleransi, misalnya adanya sedikit resonansi di nada draw lubang kelima (nada D4). Juga nada-nada tinggi sedikit terlalu melengking dan bergetar, yang nampaknya cukup bisa dimengerti mengingat suaranya bertipikal lantang. Yang banyak dikritik kalangan pengamat/pemain adalah hasil pengerjaan akhir di permukaan badan Saxony, seperti tepi sudut reedplate yang seakan belum selesai penghalusannya, yang akan terasa cukup tajam di telapak tangan, bagi pemain dengan kebiasaan tertentu.

Perbedaan yang mencolok dibandingkan harmonika lain adalah bobotnya yang cukup berat, karena dapat dikatakan ini salah satu harmonika all-metal di dunia. Ruangan slide assembly dibuat lebih rapat dengan sekeping tutup atas pelat slider hasil cor (bukan pelat seperti biasa).

Dari informasi yang kami dapatkan dari Seydel, bisa jadi mereka akan menerobos kembali di tahun mendatang ketika mereka menyediakan versi configurable tuning seperti yang sudah tersedia untuk model Chromatic Deluxe. Versi 16 lubang juga sedang dalam persiapan para perancang Seydel.

Secara keseluruhan, Seydel Saxony merupakan salah satu produk “out-of-the-box” (tanpa pengerjaan tambahan spesialis custom atau tuning) terbaik yang dapat ditemui di pasaran. Seorang pengguna setia Hohner Meisterklasse yang mencoba Saxony bahkan memberikan penilaian bahwa harmonika ini sudah berada di tingkatan yang sama dengan model kelas atas Hohner tesebut.

Hering's Deluxe Chromatic Harmonica

Harmonika ini termasuk harmonika kromatik yang bersuara lantang yang akan kehilangan responsifitas bahkan kehilangan suara ketika dimainkan dengan tenaga minim. Sangat bermanfaat untuk mengatasi kesulitan di atas panggung untuk mengontrol nada yang kita mainkan, ketika suara instrumen lain mendominasi sound system. Suara harmonika ini berkesan agak ”metalik”, cukup bulat namun kurang merdu. Beberapa kritisi menilai suara harmonika Hering mirip suara akordeon, namun saya menilai suara harmonika ini serupa pula suara harmonika seri 64 Hohner.

Responsifitas nada mulai dari C rendah (satu oktaf di bawah) sampai lubang nomor 16 (di kebanyakan harmonika bernomor 12) sangat baik. Terasakan ada jarak cukup jauh antara nada-nadanya, yang mungkin bermanfaat bagi pemula yang baru mulai memetakan nada, dan akan lebih terasakan lagi karena bentuk mouthpiece yang sangat menonjol, namun permainan oktaf (pergerakan nada jauh) cukup halus dan tidak menggesek permukaan bibir, mungkin karena permukaan depan yang rata dan berlubang bundar.

Cetakan comb acrylic dan cetakan grafis ”HERING” di bagian belakang (yang menghadap ke penonton) kasar dan berkesan murahan. Untungnya penampilan pelat kromium di penutup reedplate cukup halus dan gemerlap 

Bends Tonica 56

(Review Iman Budi Santoso, Musisi dan pengamat harmonika Kromatik)
Bagi perusahaan Bends yang baru berumur beberapa tahun saja, design harmonika ini sangat saya acungi jempol. Tonica merupakan model kromatik keluaran Bends yang diunggulkan diatas model Allegro yang lebih diarahkan kepada pemain kromatik pemula. Dari ketiga varian Tonica, varian berlubang 14 ini cukup fleksibel, apalagi dengan responsifitas nada rendahnya yang cukup baik.

Dibandingkan beberapa harmonika kromatik lain yang pernah saya coba, sangat terasa kerapatan posisi antara nada-nada yang bersebelahan, yang menurut saya sangat membantu untuk pergerakan dalam lagu yang bertempo cepat, meskipun tidak mengurangi pula kemampuannya dalam efek bending. Mouthpiece Tonica berukuran ketebalan sedang dengan tepi permukaan yang cukup halus. Suaranya yang cukup bulat, mellow dan merdu tidak didukung kemampuan untuk menghasilkan volume besar, sehingga dalam situasi tertentu sering kalah bersaing dengan instrumen lain di atas panggung, apalagi jika speaker monitor tidak banyak membantu. Namun, di lain pihak, kemampuannya untuk dimainkan dengan volume amat kecil tanpa kehilangan responsifitas sangat membantu dalam keadaan diperlukan, misalnya untuk berlatih di rumah.

Beberapa kelemahan yang saya temukan adalah mengelupasnya lapisan kromium di permukaan mouthpiece, terlepasnya salah satu windsaver, tersendatnya beberapa nada blow yang sering digunakan, tergerusnya permukaan pelat slide yang dilapisi bahan khusus oleh pelat mouthpiece assembly di sebelahnya, dan salah satu baut mouthpiece yang tidak dapat dipasang kembali ketika membongkar mouthpiece assembly. Namun, secara keseluruhan tidak terlalu mengganggu kesukaan saya pada harmonika ini.

Mungkin penilaian ini tidak cukup obyektif, mengingat harmonika yang saya pakai ini merupakan pemberian harpist kenamaan yang punya nilai sejarah yang tinggi bagi saya, sehingga saya pribadi tidak tahu dengan pasti apakah ini merupakan barang ”out of the box” atau sudah ditangani seorang tuner atau custom specialist.

Penilaian lain yang tidak dapat dihindari adalah design ”graphics printing” indah di permukaan pelat penutup reedplate atas dan bawah yang berwarna dasar hitam yang meninggalkan pola artistik yang bercitarasa tinggi berwarna dasar warna perak pelat stainless steel, dan cetakan tinta hitam di comb acrylic yang juga halus

Sophie Milman - Make Someone Happy (2007)

Sophie Milman’s debut release reveals a gifted young jazz vocalist who swings with a surprising degree of maturity. Though born in Russia, she has called Canada home for some time and is joined by some of the country’s best jazz musicians. Joshua Redman Quartet - Blues for Pat (1994)

This European CD, probably a bootleg, shows
just how exciting the band was live. On 70 minutes of music recorded in a San Francisco club, Redman often indulges in close interplay and exciting tradeoffs with Metheny; the two clearly inspired each other. The recording quality is decent, and the performances overall actually exceed Wish in passion and creativity.
